The new boat from the shipyard in Périgny near La Rochelle is essentially based on the concept of the predecessor model RM 1260 (test in YACHT 14/2012) and also adopts the existing hull from designer Marc Lombard. However: at RM, the hulls are manufactured in a buckling frame with plywood using hull templates. This unusual construction method allows the French to modify the shape of their hulls at any time and with comparatively little effort.
Compared to the previous model, the new 1270 has a slightly fuller bow section with a negatively sloping stem. The shape of the stern has also been slightly revised and made more voluminous. According to the shipyard, these measures lengthen the waterline and are intended to ensure better sailing characteristics, especially on the downwind courses and when planing.
By and large, however, these are the same changes that RM has already made with the revisions of the 880 to the 890 (test in YACHT 8/2014) and the 1060 to the 1070 (test to follow). The boats of the latest model generation from RM have more and larger hull windows and feature a longer and permanently attached bowsprit for gennakers and code zero as well as numerous optimisations to the deck layout for even better handling.
And the new models now also come with the option of a swivelling keel. The electro-hydraulically folding fin offers a variable draught of 1.15 to 2.92 metres. With two rudder blades, the boat can also fall dry. However, the version with a fixed T-keel (2.25 metres draught) and also two rudder blades remains standard. Another exciting variant is the bi-keel with two side-mounted bilge keels, which is also suitable for dry-docking. In this case, however, only one rudder blade is attached to the ship.
The yacht builders at RM Yachts have also completely redesigned the interior, both visually and functionally. In response to the berth dimensions criticised by YACHT as too small when testing the previous model, the double bed in the foredeck has now been made larger and offers more space for two people. Another new feature is the option of installing two additional bunk beds in the aft storage and workshop area on the starboard side.
The new RM 1270 is to be launched in September Fair Grand Pavois will celebrate its premiere in La Rochelle. An initial price announcement puts the base price at 252,230 euros (including 19% VAT, but without sails).
